Legal notices

Privacy, terms of use, and other disclosures

Effective date: May 10, 2026. These notices describe how this local ward program web application (the “Web Application”) handles information, the terms on which it is offered, and important limitations of liability. By using the Web Application, you agree to these terms.

1. Nature of the Web Application

The Web Application is an independent, voluntary digital tool intended to supplement physical sacrament meeting programs and related ward communications. It is operated at the ward or local level and is not a product of, or substitute for, official printed materials where those are required. Features may include published program content, live meeting state when enabled, optional newsletters or archives as configured by authorized administrators, and an optional Virtual Lesson study companion as described in these notices.

2. Relationship to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Web Application is not created, owned, operated, endorsed, supervised, or funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Church”), nor by Church-affiliated entities such as Intellectual Reserve, Inc., Deseret Management Corporation, or any of their subsidiaries or affiliates, except where individual ward or stake leaders may choose to use or promote the Web Application in their local capacity. No officer, agent, or entity of the Church assumes any responsibility for the Web Application, its content, availability, accuracy, or security. Church trademarks and names may appear in a descriptive or nominative fair-use context only; all rights in such marks remain with their respective owners.

3. Information collected — public visitors

When you browse the public program and related pages without signing in, we do not require your name, email address, phone number, or similar contact details. To support optional features, the Web Application may use:

  • Session presence (viewer count): A random, anonymous session identifier may be stored in your browser's sessionStorage for the duration of your visit. It is used only to participate in a realtime “presence” channel so an aggregate viewer count can be displayed. It is not linked to your identity and is not used for marketing or profiling.
  • Technical data: Like most web applications, infrastructure providers may process IP addresses, timestamps, and similar technical metadata as part of delivering pages and securing connections. Such processing is governed by our service providers' terms and these notices to the extent applicable.

4. Information collected — authorized administrators

Users who access administrative functions (for example, editing programs or operating live controls) authenticate through our backend provider using industry-standard mechanisms. This typically includes account identifiers such as email address, authentication tokens, and session metadata necessary to verify identity and protect ward data. Administrators are responsible for safeguarding their credentials and using admin features only as authorized by local leadership.

5. How we use information

We use the information described above to operate and secure the Web Application, display live program state to viewers, maintain administrative access controls, and comply with law where required. We do not sell your personal information. We do not use public visitor presence data for advertising or cross-site tracking.

6. Third-party providers

The Web Application relies on third-party infrastructure (including database, authentication, and realtime services) to host data and deliver updates. Our primary backend provider is Supabase, Inc. Those providers process information only as needed to perform their services and in accordance with their documentation and agreements. You acknowledge that connectivity and uptime depend in part on third parties outside our direct control. For Supabase's own privacy practices, see their Privacy Policy. Their Data Processing Addendum (including the current list of subprocessors they may engage, as updated by Supabase) describes how they process data on behalf of customers and who may assist them. Optional AI-powered features (such as Virtual Lesson or Weekly Uplift) may send prompts and conversation context to OpenAI or another AI provider as configured; see section 11 for how that processing relates to your use of the Web Application.

7. Data retention & security

Retention periods depend on the type of data and operational needs. Administrative account data persists while accounts remain active. Public session identifiers are ephemeral. We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures appropriate to the nature of the Web Application; however, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If we become aware of a breach that requires notification under applicable law, we will take reasonable steps to address it and to notify affected individuals or authorities as required.

8. Cookies, storage & similar technologies

Signed-in administrators may receive session or authentication cookies (and related tokens) as part of secure login through our backend provider—these are necessary to maintain your session and protect administrative functions. Public visitors who do not sign in are not issued account cookies for general browsing; the anonymous presence identifier described above may use sessionStorage. If you install or use the Web Application as a progressive web app (PWA), your browser may cache pages or assets locally for offline or faster loading; that caching does not change how we collect personal information as described in these notices. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies for visitors.

9. Program content & local responsibility

Meeting programs, names, hymn selections, announcements, and other materials displayed through the Web Application are supplied or approved by local ward or stake leaders (or their designees), unless otherwise noted. The Web Application is a convenience layer; it does not replace official printed programs, announcements from the pulpit, or instructions from local priesthood leaders where those sources control.

10. Virtual Lesson, Weekly Uplift & Tommy (study companion)

The Web Application may include optional features (sometimes labeled Virtual Lesson or Weekly Uplift) that present text from a companion identified as Tommy. Tommy is software that generates text using artificial intelligence; it is not a person, not Church leadership, and not an official or authoritative source of doctrine or policy. Virtual Lesson is a facilitative study chat aligned with the current Come Follow Me week. Weekly Uplift is a read-only weekly message for the app's calendar week; it may use optional Come Follow Me hints but is not limited to that curriculum. Permitted topics are limited to the restored gospel and faithful Latter-day Saint life as taught in the standard works and through latter-day prophets and apostles, and outputs may decline or narrow requests outside that scope.

AI-generated responses may be incomplete, incorrect, or unsuitable. You must not treat Tommy as a substitute for scripture, the Come Follow Me manual, General Conference, or the teachings of living prophets and apostles—those sources remain authoritative. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not create, supervise, or endorse Tommy's outputs. This tool is not official Church communication and does not constitute doctrine. Use of Virtual Lesson and Weekly Uplift is voluntary and at your sole discretion and risk. Availability may depend on third-party AI services, connectivity, and operational limits (including rate limits or account limits imposed by providers); we do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free responses.

11. Virtual Lesson & Weekly Uplift — data processing & voice input

When you use Virtual Lesson, the content you type (and related conversation context) is transmitted to third-party AI infrastructure (for example, OpenAI or another provider as configured for this deployment) so that responses can be generated. That processing is governed by the applicable provider's terms, privacy policy, and security practices. Do not submit information you are unwilling to have processed by such a provider, including sensitive personal data, confidential membership information, or health information.

Weekly Uplift does not use a typed conversation: requests send the calendar week and optional curriculum metadata for that week (no user-typed content in that request).

Conversation threads may be stored locally in your browser (for example, using localStorage) so a session can resume on the same device; that storage is not described here as being uploaded to our servers for Virtual Lesson unless this deployment is configured otherwise. Optional voice input may rely on your browser's or device's speech recognition; audio and transcripts may be processed according to your browser or operating system vendor's policies. You may clear site data in your browser to remove locally stored threads.

For OpenAI's privacy practices, see their Privacy Policy.

12. Children’s privacy (COPPA)

The Web Application is not directed at children under 13 as a primary audience and is intended for ward members and visitors viewing sacrament meeting information. In line with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”), we do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personal information from children under 13 in a manner that COPPA regulates. For typical public visitors, we do not solicit registration or contact details; only anonymous session identifiers may be used as described above. If you are a parent or guardian and believe we have inadvertently collected personal information from your child, contact us promptly using the information in the Contact section and we will take reasonable steps to delete such information from our records, subject to applicable law.

13. Your choices

You may discontinue use of the Web Application at any time. You may clear site data in your browser to remove locally stored session identifiers and, where applicable, Virtual Lesson conversation data stored on your device. Administrative users may request account assistance through local operators as applicable.

14. U.S. processing; California residents

Data is processed and stored in connection with services hosted in the United States (or as otherwise configured for this deployment). If you access the Web Application from outside the United States, you consent to that transfer and processing. California residents: Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended, we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined for sale/sharing opt-out purposes. You may request access to or deletion of personal information we hold, subject to exceptions under law, by contacting the stewards identified in the Contact section below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights.

15. Disclaimer of warranties

THE WEB APPLICATION IS PROVIDED ON AN “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE WEB APPLICATION WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS.

16. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE OPERATORS OF THE WEB APPLICATION, THEIR VOLUNTEERS, CONTRIBUTORS, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE WEB APPLICATION.

17. Release of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

YOU EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS AND ALL RELATED ENTITIES, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, VOLUNTEERS, SUCCESSORS, AND ASSIGNS (COLLECTIVELY, THE “RELEASED PARTIES”) SHALL HAVE NO LIABILITY OR RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, OR OTHERWISE, FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGE, LOSS, OR EXPENSE OF ANY KIND ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE WEB APPLICATION, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY CONTENT, AVAILABILITY, INTERRUPTION, ERROR, OMISSION, OR SECURITY INCIDENT. YOU HEREBY RELEASE, WAIVE, DISCHARGE, AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE THE RELEASED PARTIES FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, DO NOT USE THE WEB APPLICATION.

18. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the operators of the Web Application and the Released Parties from and against any claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, or debt, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your use of the Web Application, your content, or your violation of applicable law or these notices.

19. Governing law & venue

To the extent permitted by law, these notices and any dispute arising out of or relating to the Web Application or your use of it shall be governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. You agree that exclusive jurisdiction and venue for any permitted dispute resolution shall lie in the state or federal courts located in California, except where applicable law requires otherwise.

20. Severability & entire agreement

If any provision of these notices is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect. These notices, together with any terms presented at account sign-up or on administrative routes where applicable, constitute the entire agreement between you and the operators regarding the subject matter here and supersedes prior understandings to the extent they conflict.

21. Changes

We may update these notices from time to time. The revised version will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

22. Contact

Questions about these notices, including requests to exercise privacy rights where applicable, may be directed to local ward leadership or the technical stewards responsible for this deployment.
